Te Waiū-o-Te-Ika - the Whangaehu Awa

Nau mai e te uri o Te Korowai o Wainuiārua!

We are hosting the second in a series of hui designed to reconnect us as whānau to our awa, our kōrero, and our role in upholding the mana of Te Waiū-o-Te-Ika - the Whangaehu River and its catchment.

As uri of Te Korowai o Wainuiārua, we hold a seat on the River Governance Entity – Ngā Wai Tōtā, working alongside other iwi and catchment councils to implement the Te Waiū-o-Te-Ika Framework, developed through the Ngāti Rangi Treaty Settlement.

We invite you to this hui - a space for us to deepen our collective understanding, visit sites of significance, and wānanga about the role we play in restoring and protecting the awa that nourishes us.

What is Te Waiū-o-Te-Ika?

Te Waiū-o-Te-Ika refers to the full catchment of the Whangaehu Awa – from Te Wai-ā-Moe on Mt Ruapehu to the sea, including all its tributaries, wetlands and connected waterways.

The name means “The Breastmilk of the Fish” – a reference to the healing, mineral-rich waters from the maunga that sustain the land and all who dwell within the rohe. The “fish” is Te Ika-a-Māui – the North Island.

Te Waiū-o-Te-Ika Framework

This framework was created through Rukutia te Mana – the Ngāti Rangi Claims Settlement Act 2019, and belongs to all iwi and communities of the Whangaehu catchment.

It provides tools and pathways to uphold the mauri of the awa, grounded in our values, tikanga and whakapapa.

Ngā Iwi o Te Waiū-o-Te-Ika
