KIWI CONSERVATION EXPERIENCE

Tamariki from Ōrautoha School recently took part in a special learning experience, joining forces with Project Tongariro and the Department of Conservation to deepen their understanding of one of Aotearoa’s most treasured taonga, the kiwi.

Before the official handover for release, our ākonga and kaiako had the rare opportunity to meet and greet this precious manu. This unique experience was supported by Te Ara Tupua, as part of our ongoing whānau engagement mahi.

Throughout the visit, tamariki explored the kiwi’s unique adaptations, the natural habitats they depend on, and the many threats they face in the wild. This kaupapa beautifully wove together mātauranga Māori, scientific knowledge, and conservation action, sparking curiosity and a strong sense of connection.

Our tamariki returned inspired, grounded in cultural understanding and ready to take up their roles as the future kaitiakiof our whenua and taonga species.

Ka mau te wehi, tamariki mā! 🌿
